An ear trainer is a tool that plays musical sounds — like intervals or chords — and asks you to identify them. Regular practice builds relative pitch, the ability to recognize how notes and chords relate to each other by ear. For guitarists, this makes it far easier to figure out songs by ear, improvise, transcribe solos, and understand the music theory behind what you are playing.
Interval ear training plays two notes and asks you to name the distance between them — for example a perfect 5th, a major 3rd, or an octave. You can hear the two notes ascending (low to high), descending (high to low), or harmonically (both at once). Learning to recognize intervals by sound is the foundation of playing by ear.
Start with the Beginner preset, which uses just a few of the most distinct intervals (perfect 4th, perfect 5th, and the octave) or the two most common chords (major and minor). Practice until you can identify them reliably, then move up to the Intermediate and Advanced presets, or build a custom pool of the specific intervals and chords you want to drill.
The chord trainer covers major, minor, diminished, augmented, suspended 2nd, suspended 4th, dominant 7th, major 7th, and minor 7th chords. You can hear each chord played as a block (all notes together) or as an arpeggio (one note at a time), in real sampled acoustic, electric, or classical guitar tone.
